Most GA4 properties we audit were created by clicking “accept” through the setup wizard. They record page views and nothing else. Here is what we check, in order.
- Data retention set to 14 months. The default is two months, which makes year-over-year comparisons impossible.
- Internal traffic filtered. Your own office and your web developer should not count as visitors.
- Google Signals and consent settings reviewed. Turn on what you need, understand what it collects.
- Phone clicks tracked as events. For a local business this is the single most important conversion, and it is not tracked by default.
- Form submissions tracked as events. Real submissions, not page loads of a thank-you page that people also reach by refreshing.
- Key events marked. Calls, forms, chats and bookings flagged as key events so reports and ads can see them.
- Search Console linked. Query data belongs next to your traffic data.
- Bot and referral spam filtered. Unwanted referrals inflate numbers and hide the real trend.
If your account is missing more than two of these, the reports you have been reading are not telling you the truth. Our analytics setup fixes all eight and adds a monthly report you can actually read.
